Essex Youthbuild is a construction training organisation which prepares and supports young people aged 16 to 18 who are at risk of offending or re-offending and who are not in education, training or employment (NEET). Part of the aim is to move young people away from the stigma of the label 'young offender' and to support them in being able to make better choices.
Other young people can also be referred who are not known to the Youth Offending Service but who struggle to cope with a College environment and are also NEET.
The Centre in Chelmsford has been in operation since 2005. It became a registered charity in 2008 and has continued to develop. Last September, thanks to East of England Development Agency (EEDA), we were able to open another Centre in Clacton, which is an area of high deprivation. We run a City & Guilds Level 1 course and also offer other work ready courses such as Manual Handling and First Aid. All trainees take the CSCS health & safety test so that they are able to work on site and every effort is made to try and secure a two week work placement with a local builder.
Essex Youthbuild is a charity and relies on donations and grants. The Chelmsford centre receives referrals from all over Essex, whilst the Clacton Centre receives referrals from the Tendring area alone. Since opening the Clacton centre it has been over-subscribed and there is currently a waiting list for places.
Most of the young people present challenging and difficult behaviour and have often not engaged in any education or training for long periods before they are referred to Essex Youthbuild. We employ numeracy and literacy tutors to provide one to one sessions to build confidence and knowledge and the sessions are made relevant to the work being undertaken in the workshop.
We have tried to break down barriers to engagement by paying for travel to and from the Centres. The trainees also receive a training allowance of £30 a week for good attendance and behaviour. The only safety equipment they need to supply is their own pair of safety boots, but the cost is reimbursed once they have attended for three weeks and passed an assessment period.
